From September 2026, The Wirral Consortium will be using Quest Assessments as the provider of the 11 plus assessments. Our mock exams are carefully written to closely resemble the real 11 plus exam. When should children start preparing for the 11 Plus Exam?
The best time for children to start preparing for the 11 plus exam is from the beginning of year 5.
Your child will then receive the full benefit of a whole year’s course.
Children may, however, start at any point in the academic year. Although most start in the Autumn term, we welcome children at any point during the year. You may wish to wait a while for example and consider starting tuition at the start of January. Please be aware however, the longer you leave tuition, the burden of work for your child will increase as the subject material that your child needs to practise is vast. Don’t leave it too late. To register your child for Autumn term 2025 start, please get in touch using our contact form or by calling us on our number.
We also tutor children from year 3 and 4 who require some foundational support in English and Mathematics. This ensures that these children have reached the standard of age- expectations and are fully prepared to start the year 5 coursework.
What subjects are covered in the 11 plus exam?
Currently, the 11 plus exam contains three subject areas: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Mathematical Reasoning. Mathematics is the only subject from these which is taught in schools. Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning are subject areas which need time to be learnt and practised throughout year 5. Tuition is the perfect way to ensure that your child learns all the correct techniques for each question type.
What is the format of the 11 plus exam?
The exam consists of two papers. Both papers are sat on the same day and there is a short break in between. Each paper consists of timed sections in Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The format is also multiple choice, meaning that the children are required to mark their answers in a multiple-choice answer booklet. Instructions are given to the children through an audio recording.
What score does my child need to achieve to reach Grammar school standard?
Children need to acquire an age-standardised score of 236 or above to show that they are eligible to apply for a place in a Grammar school. An age-standardised score is a score that has been adjusted for age to allow for comparisons between children of different ages.
How can I best help prepare my child for the 11 plus exam?
Children who read regularly at home, talk about the text, and pick up new vocabulary along the way are much more likely to be successful in the 11 plus exam. Read with your child regularly, encourage a love of reading and put reading at the forefront of your child’s educational journey. Help with mental maths practise such as reciting and learning by heart timetables. You can also purchase 11 plus practice workbooks and test papers which provide invaluable support.

These 11 plus test packs mirror the format of the real exam. Each test pack contain 3 exam papers with timed sections in all three subjects, mirroring the exam identically in terms of timing, question styles, standards and question numbers.
